Visiting Dogo Park (Yuzuki Castle Ruins): Highlights, Hours, and Parking

A guide to Dogo Park (Yuzuki Castle Ruins): what to see, opening hours and closed days, how to get there from Dogo Onsen Station, and parking space counts and fees.

What Dogo Park (Yuzuki Castle Ruins) Is

Dogo Park is an urban park in Dogo, Matsuyama City, developed on the site of Yuzuki Castle, a medieval hill castle. Yuzuki Castle was the residence of the Kono clan, who served as the governors of Iyo Province, and it is said to have been built in the first half of the 14th century. The castle ruins are designated as a National Historic Site.

History of Yuzuki Castle

Yuzuki Castle was the residence of the Kono clan, who served as the governors of Iyo Province. It was built in the first half of the 14th century, and for about 250 years afterward it was the Kono clan's base for ruling Iyo. In 1585, during Toyotomi Hideyoshi's campaign to unify Shikoku, the castle surrendered after being surrounded by the forces of Kobayakawa Takakage, and the Kono clan's era came to an end.

  • The castle was a hill castle without a keep, and it was also known as Yuguki Castle.
  • Excavations carried out over 12 years from 1988 revealed ditches, earthen-wall remains, and imported ceramics.
  • It was designated a National Historic Site on September 20, 2002.
  • Excavations show that materials such as roof tiles from Yuzuki Castle were reused when Matsuyama Castle was built.

A Sample Walk

Walking from Dogo Onsen Station, you enter the hill of the park from the south side of the shopping street. If you keep in mind the layout of the main platform at the top, the Sugi-no-dan to the north, and the Naka-dan to the east, the park's ups and downs start to read as the structure of a castle.

  • See the history of the castle and the artifacts at the Yuzuki Castle Museum.
  • Walk through the restored samurai residence and the earthen rampart exhibition room.
  • Look out over central Matsuyama and Dogo from the observation point.
  • If you continue to Ishiteji Temple, walk from the east side of the park.
