Dogo Onsen Public-Bath Checklist: Towels, Soap and a Waterproof Bag

What to bring

When visiting Dogo Onsen Honkan, Asuka no Yu and Tsubaki no Yu, check whether your chosen course includes towels. The following items are useful:

• A face towel and, if needed, a bath towel
• A waterproof pouch or sealable plastic bag for wet towels
• Shampoo, conditioner and body soap when visiting Tsubaki no Yu
• Coins or another convenient payment method
• A change of clothes and any personal care items you need

Keep towels out of the bathwater. Use a face towel outside the tub, or place it on your head or at the edge of the bath.

Towel and toiletry arrangements

Dogo Onsen Honkan

The bathing area has shampoo, conditioner and body soap. Towel arrangements depend on the course. The Rei no Yu course includes a rental towel and a rental bath towel. The official shop-products information also lists a rental towel for 110 yen and a rental bath towel for 320 yen.

Dogo Onsen Annex Asuka no Yu

The bathing area has shampoo, conditioner and body soap. The second-floor private-room course includes a rental towel, but not a rental bath towel. The second-floor special-bathroom course includes both a rental towel and a rental bath towel. The official shop-products information lists a rental towel for 110 yen and a rental bath towel for 320 yen.

Tsubaki no Yu

Shampoo, conditioner and body soap are not provided in the bathing area. Bring your own or buy them at the shop. Confirmed examples are shampoo 50 yen, conditioner 50 yen, a rental towel 110 yen, a rental bath towel 320 yen, an original face towel 650 yen and an original bath towel 2,200 yen.

Carrying wet towels

After bathing, put the wet towel in a waterproof pouch or sealable plastic bag so that it does not soak the rest of your luggage. This is especially useful when visiting more than one bath.

If you forget a towel or toiletry

The shops at the public baths may have towels and toiletries. Iori Honten is open 9:00–21:00. It also offers the Dogo Rental Towel Service, which is open 9:00–20:00 and rents approximately 90 types of bath towel. Takada Towel Shop is listed as open 10:00–19:00 and sells towels.

Products and rentals may require payment, so “going empty-handed” does not mean that every towel or toiletry is free or included in every course.

Lockers and small change

Use the changing-room locker according to the facility’s instructions and keep its key with you while bathing. Bring some coins because lockers or purchases may require small change depending on the facility or course. Driers are available free of charge in the changing rooms at facilities such as Honkan.
