Dogo Onsen Honkan
The symbol of Dogo Onsen: a three-story wooden public bathhouse. Rebuilt in 1894 (Meiji 27), it is a National Important Cultural Property. Preservation and repair work was completed in December 2024, and the entire building is now open.
Dogo Onsen Honkan is a symbolic public bath of Dogo Onsen located in Dogo Yunomachi, Matsuyama City. It is a central facility of Dogo Onsen, which is said to convey about 3,000 years of history, and the current building was reconstructed in 1894. Known for its grand appearance as a three-story wooden building, it was designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan in December 1994, the first time for a public bath. It is also popular as a place associated with Natsume Soseki's novel "Botchan," and celebrated the 130th anniversary of its reconstruction in 2024.
Architectural Highlights
- Shinrokaku: A tower room built on the roof of the Honkan, featuring red giaman (glass) windows and topped with a statue of a white egret, serving as the symbol of the Honkan.
- Toki-daiko: A drum beaten in the morning, noon, and evening at Shinrokaku, which has been selected as one of the "100 Soundscapes of Japan."
- Yushinden: Said to be the only bathroom in Japan dedicated exclusively to the Imperial Family, equipped with the Imperial Throne Room, the Imperial Sitting Room, and the Imperial Bath. It can be viewed on the observation tour course.

Private rooms (Shirasagi no Ma, Hisho no Ma) require reservations, and starting times are fixed. The estimated duration for each course is 60 to 90 minutes.

Conservation and Repair Work
The conservation and repair work, which had been underway since January 2019, was completed on December 20, 2024, after about 6 years. Bathing operations continued during the construction period, and full operations resumed in July 2024. Currently, the entire building is open for business.

Gyomu Super Dogo
Gyomu Super Dogo is located in Dogo Yunomachi. Commercial-sized products and frozen foods are available for purchase at reasonable prices.
Sumiya Tobeyaki
Sumiya Tobeyaki is a craft and folk craft store in the Dogo Onsen district. As the store name suggests, it handles Tobe ware, a traditional Ehime ceramic.
Nabeyaki Udon mammam
A nabeyaki udon restaurant in Dogo Yunomachi. Its signature dish is the Matsuyama speciality nabeyaki udon, with a broth made from Hokkaido makonbu kelp and Seto Inland Sea iriko, alongside side dishes such as inari-zushi.
Mamekichi Honpo Dogo Haikara-dori
A shop on Dogo Haikara-dori specialising in bean confectionery. It stocks a range of Japanese and Western flavours, suited to eating as you walk or taking home as a gift.
