How to Enjoy Dogo Onsen Honkan and the Surrounding Area Without Taking a Bath

Even without bathing, you can enjoy the guided tour of Yushinden (500 yen for adults, reservation required), the free footbaths at Sora no Sanpomichi and Hojoen, and the DOGO ART light-up. If you are waiting for companions who are bathing, decide on a landmark such as Hojoen in advance to make meeting up easier.

What You Can Do Without Bathing

See the Honkan exterior: Dogo Onsen Honkan opens at 6:00, and Kami no Yu ground floor is open until 23:00 (last entry 22:30).
Take the guided tour of Yushinden: 30 minutes, reservation required (no bathing).
Look down on the Honkan from Sora no Sanpomichi: an observation walkway on Kanmuriyama, south of the Honkan. The footbath is open 6:00–21:00 and is free.
Visit the Hojoen footbath and Karakuri Clock: in front of Dogo Onsen Station. The footbath is open 6:00–23:00 and is free. The Botchan Karakuri Clock moves every hour from 8:00 to 22:00 (every 30 minutes on Saturdays, Sundays, holidays and busy periods).
Touch the source water at the 4th Bunyujo: the viewing room is open 9:00–20:00, and the hand bath is available 24 hours. Free.
See the night light-up: during DOGO ART (through 2027-2-28), the Honkan installation runs 17:00–23:30 in winter (October–March) and 18:00–23:30 in summer (April–September).

Can You See Inside the Honkan Without Bathing? (Yushinden Viewing)

The official Dogo Onsen Honkan price list includes “Yushinden Viewing (Guided)” separately from the bathing courses.

Yushinden has a throne room, an imperial living room, an imperial bath and other rooms, and is Japan's only bath reserved for the Imperial Family. The Rei no Yu 3rd-floor private room and reserved room courses include free Yushinden viewing, but people who are not bathing can enter through the guided tour above.

The Honkan Exterior and Photo Spots

Dogo Onsen Honkan's reconstruction was begun by Isaniwa Yukiya after he became mayor in Meiji 23 (1890) and was completed in Meiji 27 (1894). In December of Heisei 6, it became the first public bath to be designated a national Important Cultural Property. Preservation and repair work that began in January of Heisei 31 ended on December 20 of Reiwa 6.

The sound of the time drum at Shinrokaku, on the roof of the Honkan's 3-story building, was selected as one of Japan's 100 Soundscapes. On the north side of the Honkan, Tama no Ishi is enshrined in connection with the legend of Okuninushi no Mikoto and Sukunahikona no Mikoto.

Times and Photography Rules

For a full view, go up to Sora no Sanpomichi on the south side of the Honkan. At night, the DOGO ART light-up illuminates photographic works installed on shoji screens and glass.

Photography is not allowed in the bathing areas. When photographing the exterior or nearby shrines and temples, follow no-photography signs and tripod restrictions. Ask before pointing a camera at people. For commercial photography or shoots involving models, contact each shrine or temple in advance.

What to See at Night: Light-Up and Lantern Gate

Matsuyama City's information gives the dates of the art project “Mika Ninagawa with EiM × Dogo Onsen DOGO ART” as 2025-10-10 to 2027-2-28. During the exhibition, 36 photographs of seasonal flowers, goldfish and other subjects are installed on shoji screens and glass on the north and west sides of the Honkan and lit up at night.

The gate with lanterns and curtains is at the main entrance of Dogo Shopping Street, which runs from Dogo Onsen Station to the Honkan. The times are from Matsuyama City's press release (updated 2025-11-28; checked 2026-10-23).

Sora no Sanpomichi: Footbath and a View Over the Honkan

Sora no Sanpomichi is an observation walkway on Kanmuriyama, south of Dogo Onsen Honkan.

It offers a full view of the Honkan below and a panoramic view of the Dogo area.
There is a gazebo, benches and a free-flowing source-water footbath. There is also a changing booth for the footbath.
In addition to a wisteria trellis, the garden has cherry blossoms in spring, hydrangeas in summer, autumn leaves in fall and camellias in winter. It is lit at night.
Address: 4-30 Dogo Yunomachi, Matsuyama. About 10 minutes on foot from Dogo Onsen Station.
Footbath: 6:00–21:00, free. Open every day (the footbath closes for 1 day in December).

Towels are not provided at the footbath, so bring one if you plan to use it (Dogo Onsen official area guide, “List of Hand Baths and Footbaths”).

Botchan Train

The sightseeing “Botchan Train” runs around the area. Its nickname comes from the characters who ride a train in Natsume Soseki's novel Botchan.

Meeting Places for Those Bathing and Those Not Bathing

When some people bathe and others do not, decide on a meeting place and time before separating. If companions who are bathing use a rest course on the 2nd or 3rd floor of Dogo Onsen Honkan, use the time when tea and sweets are served after bathing as a guide.
