Among these are public foot bath facilities managed by Matsuyama City and other entities that are open for free, allowing you to stop by and rest your feet during your stroll.

Free foot baths are maintained as public spaces that anyone can use. Since the available hours and rules to follow are established in advance, it is recommended to check them before using the facilities.

Location and Operating Hours of Hojoen Foot Bath

One of the representative free foot baths in the Dogo Onsen area is the "Hojoen" foot bath located right in front of the Iyo Railway "Dogo Onsen Station". It is situated in the square in front of the station, with the Botchan Karakuri Clock and a yugama from the Meiji period installed next to it.

Although the Hojoen square itself is open 24 hours, the hours during which the foot bath can be used are from 8:00 to 22:00. You can freely sit down and use it during operating hours, such as right after arriving from the station, before starting a stroll, or during a night walk.

Location and Operating Hours of Sora no Sanpodo Foot Bath

Another free foot bath spot is located within "Sora no Sanpodo", a promenade facility on the high ground to the south of the Dogo Onsen Honkan. This spot offers a panoramic view looking down on the Dogo Onsen Honkan building from above.

While the promenade section of Sora no Sanpodo is open 24 hours, the operating hours for the installed foot bath are set from 6:00 to 21:00. Since the available hours differ from those of the Hojoen foot bath, attention must be paid to the time of your visit.

Items to Prepare When Using Foot Baths

There are several items that are useful to prepare in advance when using foot baths. A "small towel (face towel)" to wipe your feet after getting out of the foot bath is a must-have item. Additionally, it is convenient to have a small plastic bag to carry the wet towel.

Regarding clothing, it is recommended to visit wearing pants or skirts that can be easily rolled up to below the knees, and shoes that are easy to put on and take off. Since wearing tights or stockings makes taking them off and putting them back on troublesome, it is advisable to keep your attire in mind during your stroll.

If you do not have a towel to wipe your feet, you can obtain one at nearby facilities and public bathhouses. For example, at the shop inside Dogo Onsen Honkan, original face towels are sold for 360 yen, and rental towels are also provided for 110 yen. Additionally, rental towels are available for 50 yen at the shop in Tsubaki no Yu.

Furthermore, in the Dogo Onsen area, there are also paid facilities such as "foot bath cafes" operated by private businesses (e.g., Dogo Ashiyu Cafe Botchan, operating hours 9:30–18:00, Saturdays until 20:00). Since usage conditions and fees differ between public free foot baths and private establishments that serve food and drinks, it is necessary to choose according to your purpose.

Basic Etiquette for Comfortably Using Foot Baths

To ensure that everyone can comfortably use the foot baths, which are public spaces, it is important to observe basic etiquette. Before soaking in the foot bath, consideration is requested to lightly rinse off any sand or dirt on your feet before putting them into the tub.

Also, when it is crowded, it is hoped that individuals will share the space instead of occupying it alone for a long time. In the official etiquette of Dogo Onsen, rules such as "do not use mobile phones or smartphones in changing rooms or bathrooms, and do not take photos" are established. Even at outdoor foot baths, it is required to respect the privacy of surrounding users and pay sufficient attention to actions such as taking photos.
