Dogo Onsen Parking Guide - Free Parking, "1 Hour Free" Conditions, Municipal, and Dogo Park Fees

The Dogo Onsen Main Building (Dogo Onsen Honkan) does not have a parking lot exclusively for the building itself.

There is no "exclusive" parking lot for the Dogo Onsen Main Building

The Dogo Onsen Main Building (Dogo Onsen Honkan) does not have a parking lot exclusively for the building itself. According to Matsuyama City's guide, two municipal parking lots are suggested for visitors to the Main Building. On the east side of the Main Building, there is a parking space for persons with disabilities (for 2 vehicles) and a bicycle parking area.

Below, we list the places where you can park a car around Dogo Onsen, in the order of municipal, free open parking, Dogo Park, and private, focusing only on fees and conditions. Which one is better depends on the duration and purpose of your stay, so the order does not imply superiority.

Where can I park for free?

The conditions for being "free" vary by parking lot. We will list just the conclusions first.

  • Matsuyama Sightseeing Temporary Parking Lot (22-1 Dogo Himezuka, Matsuyama City / approx. 60 spaces): The fee is free. However, it is only available on open days. Open days generally target Saturdays, Sundays, Golden Week, year-end and New Year holidays, and spring/summer/winter school holidays, but the schedule changes depending on the year. You cannot park on days that are not designated open days.
  • Dogo Onsen Iwaidani Higashimachi Parking Lot: Regardless of whether you used the facilities or not, the first 1 hour is free, and no validation is required. After 1 hour, it is 100 yen per 30 minutes.
  • Dogo Onsen Parking Lot: Only if you use one of the 3 outer public bathhouses (Main Building, Tsubaki no Yu, Asuka no Yu) and pass your parking ticket through the validation machine inside the building, the first 1 hour is free.
  • Dogo Park (Yuzuki Castle Ruins): There is no mention of free time in the official information of Matsuyama City (Standard cars 100 yen for 30 minutes). Admission to the park itself and the Yuzuki Castle Museum is free.
  • Bicycles and Mopeds: The Dogo Onsen Area Town Bicycle Parking Lot is free (approx. 75 spaces / 6:00 AM - 11:30 PM).

Below are the fees and conditions for each in order.

Municipal Parking Lots (Paid)

Dogo Onsen Parking Lot

  • Location: 4-30 Dogo Yunomachi, Matsuyama City (South of the Main Building, Kanmuriyama)
  • Capacity: 100 spaces (Motorcycles over 125cc are also allowed)
  • Business Hours: 5:30 AM to 11:30 PM
  • Fee: 100 yen per 30 minutes / Overnight fee 720 yen (8:30 PM to 8:30 AM the next morning)

This is the closest municipal parking lot to the Main Building. Because business hours are fixed, parking before 5:30 AM or overnight past midnight is not possible without incurring the overnight charge. If you stay at an inn and leave your car parked, the overnight fee of 720 yen applies.

Dogo Onsen Iwaidani Higashimachi Parking Lot

  • Location: 437-1 Iwaidani Higashimachi, Matsuyama City (approx. 400m further from the entrance of the Dogo Onsen Parking Lot)
  • Capacity: 43 spaces (Motorcycles over 125cc are also allowed)
  • Business Hours: 24 hours
  • Fee: 100 yen per 30 minutes

The feature of this parking lot is that you can enter and exit 24 hours a day. When you want to park without worrying about time, or when arriving/departing early morning or late night, this becomes an option.

There are two conditions for getting the "first 1 hour free"

What often causes confusion with Dogo Onsen's parking lots is the handling of free time. The conditions differ depending on the parking lot.

  1. Dogo Onsen Parking Lot: If you use the Dogo Onsen Main Building, Dogo Onsen Tsubaki no Yu, or Dogo Onsen Annex Asuka no Yu, and pass your parking ticket through the validation machine in each building, the first 1 hour becomes free. It will not be free if you do not pass it through the validation machine.
  2. Dogo Onsen Iwaidani Higashimachi Parking Lot: Regardless of whether you used the facilities or not, the first 1 hour is free. Validation is also unnecessary.

In other words, the difference is that if you take an outer bath, you validate at the Dogo Onsen Parking Lot; if you just walk around the town a bit without taking a bath, you get 1 hour free even at Iwaidani Higashimachi.

Free parking lot available only on open days - Matsuyama Sightseeing Temporary Parking Lot

  • Location: 22-1 Dogo Himezuka, Matsuyama City
  • Capacity: approx. 60 spaces
  • Business Hours: 5:30 AM to 11:30 PM on open days
  • Fee: Free

This is a temporary parking lot opened by Matsuyama City for the convenience of tourists, and there is no charge. However, it is open only on specific days. Open days generally target Saturdays, Sundays, Golden Week, year-end and New Year holidays, and spring/summer/winter school holidays, but the schedule changes depending on the year. Matsuyama City publishes an "Open Day Calendar for Temporary Parking Lots" as open data, so it is best to check the open days for that year before heading out. You cannot park if you go on a day that is not an open day.

Parking lot at Dogo Park (Yuzuki Castle Ruins)

There is also a parking lot at Dogo Park, located across the street from the Dogo Onsen Main Building. The operation is separate from the municipal parking lots.

  • West Entrance: 23 spaces
  • North Entrance: 11 spaces
  • Fee: 100 yen per 30 minutes per standard car (available 24 hours)
  • Sightseeing Buses: 160 yen per 30 minutes per bus. Available from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM, only on days when the Yuzuki Castle Museum is open. Reservation required.

With a combined total of 34 spaces across the two locations, the scale is not large. The park itself is always open and free, and admission to the museum is also free.

Motorcycles and Bicycles

  • Motorcycles over 125cc: Can be parked at either the Dogo Onsen Parking Lot or the Dogo Onsen Iwaidani Higashimachi Parking Lot.
  • Bicycles and Mopeds: The Dogo Onsen Area Town Bicycle Parking Lot (1461-1 Dogo Yunomachi, Matsuyama City) can be used. Approx. 75 spaces / 6:00 AM - 11:30 PM / Free. There is also a bicycle parking area on the east side of the Main Building.

Private Coin Parking Lots

Around Dogo Onsen, private coin parking lots are also scattered, including hourly rentals of bank and JA parking lots. The fee structure and maximum charge vary by operator and are subject to change, so please check the signboards on site. They are also listed individually on this site.

How to think about busy periods

The parking capacity in the Dogo area is by no means large, with 100 spaces at the Dogo Onsen Parking Lot, 43 at Iwaidani Higashimachi, and 34 at Dogo Park. During the day on consecutive holidays or summer vacation, they can become full. The temporary parking lot can be used on days it is open, but open days are limited.

The fact that it is not a place you can only reach by car is also a factor to consider. City trams of Iyotetsu run to Dogo Onsen Station from Matsuyama City Station and JR Matsuyama Station, and limousine buses run directly to Dogo Onsen from Matsuyama Airport. If you are staying overnight, checking the availability and fee of the accommodation's parking lot in advance will save you the trouble of looking for a parking space on the day.

Fees, business hours, and open days are subject to change. Please check the official information of Matsuyama City and each operator for the latest information.
