How to Choose Where to Stay in Dogo Onsen: Ryokan, Hotels, and Guesthouses

A guide to choosing a place to stay in Dogo Onsen, organized by distance from the Honkan, meals, baths, budget, and room-only options, with examples from the area.

Four Points to Check When Choosing a Place to Stay in Dogo

Dogo Onsen has a mix of ryokan, hotels, guesthouses, and minshuku, and each type has its own character. To make the choice easier, check four points in order: the distance to Dogo Onsen Honkan, the meals, the baths, and the budget.

Point 1: Distance to Dogo Onsen Honkan

In Dogo, how close you are to the Honkan and the shopping street affects how easy your stay feels. Staying right by the Honkan makes early-morning and late-night visits to the public baths easier. A lodging a little farther away, up on the hill, trades that convenience for views and quiet, but adds walking time on slopes.

  • Yamatoya Honten: a long-established ryokan right next to the Honkan. It is said to have been founded in 1868.
  • Dogo Onsen Hanayuzuki: a high-rise hotel about a one-minute walk from the Honkan.
  • Funaya: a long-established ryokan in Dogo-Yunomachi, close to the Honkan and the shopping street.
  • Dogo Kowakuen Haruka: a hotel on a hill near the Honkan, with an observation bath looking over central Matsuyama.

Point 2: Meals

If the meals at your lodging matter, check what dinner and breakfast include and whether the lodging has its own restaurant. Another option is to book a room without meals and eat in town.

  • Dogo Onsen Chaharu: it has dining rooms serving Japanese and Western kaiseki and buffets.
  • Dogo Prince Hotel: a large hot-spring hotel with kaiseki meals and a variety of baths.
  • Ooedo Onsen Monogatari Dogo: known for buffet-style meals and an open-air bath looking over Matsuyama Castle and the town.

Point 3: Baths

Some lodgings in Dogo have large baths fed by the hot spring source or open-air baths in the guest rooms. If you plan to visit the public baths instead, the bath at your lodging does not have to be the priority.

  • Dogo Miyu: a hotel where all 30 rooms have an open-air bath.
  • Koto no Niwa: a wooden lodging where all 10 rooms have a bath fed directly from the source.
  • Dogo Onsen Yachiyo: a lodging where every room has an open-air bath and meals are served in your room.
  • Dogo Kowakuen Haruka: it also welcomes day visitors to its bath, at 1,800 yen for adults (reception 13:00-21:00).

Point 4: Budget and Room-Only Stays

Budgets vary widely. Choosing an inexpensive lodging or one without meals lets you keep costs down by eating in town.

  • Hotel Eco Dogo: dormitory beds from about 2,200 yen, Japanese-style rooms from about 5,900 yen (rates vary by season).
  • Hotel Nakagawa: room-only stays from about 4,200 yen per person (based on two guests).
  • Matsuyama Dogo Business Hotel Sakura: a business hotel about a four-minute walk from the Honkan.
  • Villa Dogo: a lodging from about 5,200 yen per night.

Rates change with the season and the plan. Please check the latest information on each lodging's official website before booking.

Guesthouses and Minshuku

For solo travelers and longer stays, guesthouses and minshuku are also an option. These usually center on shared kitchens and lounges where you spend time with other travelers.

  • Cinnamon Guesthouse Dogo: a guesthouse about a two-minute walk from Dogo Onsen Station.
  • Fujiya: it has a shared living room and kitchen, and is a three-minute walk from the Honkan.
  • Dougoya: a lodging in Dogo-Yunomachi, close to the Honkan and the shopping street.
  • Guesthouse DOUGOYADO KITA: a whole-house rental guesthouse in Dogo-Kitamachi.
  • Minshuku Mikan: a room-only minshuku along the pilgrimage road near Ishiteji Temple.
