8 Museums and Art Galleries Around Dogo — Opening Days, Admission Fees, and Walking Routes

This guide compiles the opening hours, closed days, and admission fees of 8 museums, art galleries, and temple treasure halls that can be visited on foot from Dogo Onsen Station, and presents 2 walking routes based on differences in closed days. The Shiki Memorial Museum is closed on Tuesdays, the Seki Art Museum is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, Bydeisha is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and Matsuyama Togetsuan is open only on Saturdays and Sundays.

Around Dogo Onsen, multiple art museums, museums, and historical exhibition facilities exist within walking distance. The exhibition contents cover a wide range, including Japanese glass from the Edo to Taisho periods, literary materials related to Masaoka Shiki, sculptures and paintings, excavated artifacts from castle ruins, and temple treasures and ancient documents. Because opening hours, closed days, and admission methods differ by facility, it is necessary to check according to the day of the week and time of your visit.

Examples of Itineraries

When touring on foot from Dogo Onsen Station, it is necessary to pay attention to the differences in opening days of each facility. The Shiki Memorial Museum is closed on Tuesdays (the following day if a holiday), the Seki Art Museum is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, Bindeisha is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and requires reservations, the Yuzuki Castle Museum is closed on Mondays (the following day if a holiday), and Matsuyama Togetsuan is open only on Saturdays and Sundays (with occasional temporary closures). Based on these, two walking combinations are presented.

The first is a combination exploring history and literature in the direction of Dogo Park. This route heads from Dogo Onsen Station to Dogo Park, views excavated artifacts and reconstructed samurai residences at the Yuzuki Castle Museum right next to Dogo-koen Station, and then browses Shiki-related materials at the Matsuyama Municipal Shiki Memorial Museum, about 5 minutes from Dogo-koen Station. Furthermore, it extends to Hogon-ji Temple, a 10-minute walk from Dogo Onsen Station, visiting the historic site of the birthplace of Ippen Shonin and a Shiki haiku monument. Because the Yuzuki Castle Museum is closed on Mondays and the Shiki Memorial Museum is closed on Tuesdays, if visiting on the same day, choose Wednesday through Sunday. Please check the opening hours and admission fee of the Ippen Shonin Hall with the temple in advance.

The second is a combination exploring Japanese glass crafts and art works. You view Japanese glass at the Dogo Giyaman Glass Museum (open year-round), about a 5-minute walk from Dogo Onsen Station, and appreciate sculptures and paintings at the Seki Art Museum, a 5-minute walk away. Furthermore, you move to the Bindeisha Glass Museum, about an 8-minute walk from Dogo Onsen Station, and view the exhibits with commentary. On Saturdays and Sundays, it is also possible to combine the Matsuyama Togetsuan Cultural History Museum located in Mochidacho. Because the Seki Art Museum is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays and Bindeisha is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and requires reservations, the days of the week to visit on the same day are Thursday through Sunday (with Togetsuan also a candidate on Saturdays and Sundays).

Opening on national holidays and whether substitution occurs on the following business day, as well as New Year holiday closures, are also determined by each facility.

In addition, attention is required regarding closures during exhibition change periods and temporary closures. The Seki Art Museum and Bindeisha have closures due to exhibition changes, and the Matsuyama Togetsuan Cultural History Museum has temporary closures. Regarding admission methods, Bindeisha requires advance reservations for admission, and reservations by the day before are also required for matcha and sweets.

Furthermore, there are facilities where closing times change by season, such as the Shiki Memorial Museum, and facilities where you must inquire with the temple to confirm the opening hours and admission fee, such as the Ippen Shonin Hall at Hogon-ji Temple. Please check the official announcements of each facility and temple for the latest information.
