Masaoka Shiki Haiku Monument "Momi hosu ya" (Path of Haiku)

Masaoka Shiki Haiku Monument "Momi hosu ya" (Path of Haiku)

A haiku monument to Masaoka Shiki on the Dogo-machi 2-chome side of the "Path of Haiku" in Dogo (the street east of the Ehime Prefectural Culture Hall). It is inscribed with the haiku "籾ほすやにわとり遊ふ門の内".

The Masaoka Shiki Haiku Monument "Momi hosu ya" (Path of Haiku) stands on the Dogo-machi 2-chome side of the "Path of Haiku", the street that runs along the east side of the Ehime Prefectural Culture Hall. It is inscribed with the haiku "籾ほすやにわとり遊ふ門の内" (Momi hosu ya niwatori asobu kado no uchi).

Masaoka Shiki (1867–1902) was born in Matsuyama, and his real name was Tsunenori. Based at the newspaper "Nippon", he led the reform of haiku and tanka. This monument has two of Shiki's haiku carved side by side on a single stone; the other one is "馬しかる新酒の酔や頬冠" (confirmed by the contributor's on-site photo and by the Shiki Memorial Museum's list, where the two haiku share the same number).

The monument stands along the road of the "Path of Haiku", and the local information board lists it on the Dogo-machi 2-chome side. The map pin on this page marks a representative point of the Dogo-machi 2-chome section, not the exact position of this monument. The full list of the 11 haiku (on 10 monuments) is on the "Path of Haiku" page.
