Statue of Masaoka Shiki
A bronze statue of the haiku poet Masaoka Shiki in Hojoen plaza in front of Dogo Onsen Station. In reference to Shiki's love of baseball, he is depicted wearing a baseball uniform.
The Statue of Masaoka Shiki is a bronze statue of Masaoka Shiki (1867-1902), a haiku poet from Matsuyama, located in "Hojoen," a plaza in front of Dogo Onsen Station. Hojoen is at the entrance of Dogo Shopping Street, and along with the Botchan Karakuri Clock and a footbath using the hot spring source, it decorates the gateway to the Dogo Onsen town.
Statue Representing Shiki, a Baseball Enthusiast
Shiki is also known for his love of baseball and is passed down as a figure who was involved in the translation and dissemination of baseball terms. The statue of Shiki in Hojoen is characterized by being depicted in a baseball uniform in reference to this aspect of his life.
About Hojoen
Hojoen was developed in December 2002 (2002) as a place of relaxation for citizens and tourists. Inside the plaza, there is also a footbath using a yugama (hot spring cauldron) that was used at Dogo Onsen Honkan from the Meiji to Showa periods.
