Path of Haiku (the street of haiku monuments east of the Ehime Prefectural Culture Hall)

The "Path of Haiku" is a street east of the Ehime Prefectural Culture Hall lined with 10 haiku and senryu monuments (11 verses) connected with Dogo Onsen. This page lists the verses by Soseki, Shiki, Santoka and others.

The "Path of Haiku" is a road running north–south along the east side of the Ehime Prefectural Culture Hall. Along it stand monuments carved with haiku and senryu connected with Dogo Onsen. The Matsuyama City Board of Education information board on site lists 6 verses on the southern Dogo-machi 2-chome side and 5 on the northern Dogo-Kitamachi side, 11 verses in all. Two of Masaoka Shiki's haiku are carved side by side on a single stone, so there are 5 monuments on the Dogo-machi 2-chome side and 10 in total.

Dogo-machi 2-chome side (6 verses, 5 monuments)

  • Natsume Soseki: "永き日やあくびうつして分れ行く"
  • Murakami Seigetsu: "春百里疲れて浸る温泉槽哉"
  • Masaoka Shiki (two haiku on one monument): "馬しかる新酒の酔や頬冠" / "籾ほすやにわとり遊ふ門の内"
  • Kawahigashi Hekigoto: "温泉めぐりして戻りし部屋に桃の活けてある"
  • Maeda Goken (senryu): "いろいろの歴史道後の湯はつきず"

Dogo-Kitamachi side (5 monuments)

  • Naito Meisetsu: "湯上りを暫く冬の扇かな"
  • Mori Motengai: "伊予と申す国あたゝかに温泉わく"
  • Yanagihara Kyokudo: "湯の町の見えて石手へ遍路道"
  • Ishida Hakyo: "ほしいまゝ湯気立たしめてひとり居む"
  • Taneda Santoka: "ずんぶり湯の中の顔と顔笑ふ"

The information board lists the monuments in the order above, but we have not confirmed the exact position of each one. The map pin marks the middle of the section south of the boundary between Dogo-machi 2-chome and Dogo-Kitamachi (around latitude 33.8505). Each poet and verse is introduced on the page for that monument.
