Yanagihara Kyokudo Haiku Monument
A haiku monument is located in Hojoen, in front of Dogo Onsen Honkan. It commemorates Ryu Hiroshi (1867–1957), a poet from Matsuyama. Ryu Hiroshi founded the literary magazine 'Hototogisu' in Matsuyama in 1897, and became the first honorary citizen of Matsuyama City.
The Yanagihara Kyokudo Haiku Monument is a monument located in Hojoen in front of Dogo Onsen Honkan. It commemorates Yanagihara Kyokudo, a haiku poet associated with Matsuyama.
Yanagihara Kyokudo
Yanagihara Kyokudo (1867-1957) was a haiku poet and journalist from Matsuyama. He deepened his friendship with Shiki Masaoka, who was the same age, at Matsuyama Middle School, and later changed his haiku pen name to "Kyokudo" at Shiki's suggestion. In 1897, he launched the monthly haiku magazine "Hototogisu" in Matsuyama (from the 21st issue onward, it was handed over to Kyoshi Takahama and continued as "Hototogisu" in Tokyo).
He also worked as a newspaper reporter and a Matsuyama City Council member, and in his later years, he devoted his efforts to the research and honoring of Shiki. In 1957, he was selected as the first honorary citizen of Matsuyama City, and passed away in the same year at the age of 90.
Hojoen, where the haiku monument is located, is right in front of Dogo Onsen Honkan, and you can stop by along with the footbath and the Botchan Karakuri Clock.
