Natsume Soseki Haiku Monument (Path of Haiku)
A haiku monument to Natsume Soseki on the Dogo-machi 2-chome side of the "Path of Haiku" in Dogo (the street east of the Ehime Prefectural Culture Hall). It is inscribed with the haiku "永き日やあくびうつして分れ行く".
The Natsume Soseki Haiku Monument (Path of Haiku) stands on the Dogo-machi 2-chome side of the "Path of Haiku", the street that runs along the east side of the Ehime Prefectural Culture Hall. It is inscribed with the haiku "永き日やあくびうつして分れ行く" (Nagaki hi ya akubi utsushite wakare yuku).
Natsume Soseki (1867–1916) was a novelist born in Edo, whose real name was Kinnosuke. He became close friends with Masaoka Shiki at the university preparatory school, and they remained friends for life. In 1895 (Meiji 28) he came to Matsuyama as an English teacher at Ehime Prefectural Ordinary Middle School (Matsuyama Middle School), and he later published works such as "Botchan" and "Kusamakura".
The monument stands along the road of the "Path of Haiku", and the local information board lists it on the Dogo-machi 2-chome side. The map pin on this page marks a representative point of the Dogo-machi 2-chome section, not the exact position of this monument. The full list of the 11 haiku (on 10 monuments) is on the "Path of Haiku" page.
