About Tobe ware

Tobe ware (Tobeyaki) is ceramics made mainly around Tobe Town, Iyo District, Ehime Prefecture, and is an Ehime Prefecture-designated intangible cultural property. It was designated as a national traditional craft in 1976. Since high-quality pottery stone was produced from the mountains in the hinterland, it developed under the patronage of the Ozu Domain during the Edo period.

Its general characteristics include hand-painting blue designs called Gosu on relatively thick white porcelain. Compared to porcelain from other production areas, it is durable and less prone to cracks or chips, and many daily tableware and flower vases are made from it. A representative pattern is the Karakusamon (arabesque pattern), which models plant stems and leaves.

Location

It is located in the Dogo Onsen town close to the Dogo Onsen Main Building. Since business hours and product availability vary, please check before visiting the store.
