About Tobe Ware
Tobe ware is a ceramic produced mainly in Tobe Town, Iyo District, Ehime Prefecture, and is a designated Intangible Cultural Property of Ehime Prefecture. In 1976, it was designated as a traditional craft of Japan. Because high-quality pottery stone was produced from the mountains behind the area, it developed during the Edo period under the patronage of the Ozu Domain.
A general feature is hand-painting indigo designs using a pigment called gosu on slightly thick white porcelain. Compared to porcelain from other production areas, it is sturdy and less prone to cracks and chips, and many daily tableware items and flower vases are made. A representative design is karakusa-mon, which models the stems and leaves of plants.
