About Imabari Towels
Imabari towels are towels produced mainly in Imabari City, as well as Saijo City and Matsuyama City in Ehime Prefecture, and are known as the regional collective trademark "Imabari Towel." The Imabari Towel Industrial Association is located in Imabari City. In 1960, Imabari surpassed Senshu to become Japan's largest towel-producing region, holding a share of nearly 60% of domestically produced towels.
It is said to have originated in 1894 when Heisuke Abe modified a cotton flannel machine to begin towel production. Later, a production method called "saki-zarashi saki-zome" (pre-bleaching and pre-dyeing) utilizing Imabari's abundant water resources was established, and the technology to weave delicate patterns became a characteristic of Imabari towels.
