"Sumiya Tobeyakiten" is a craft and folk craft store dealing in Tobe ware, located in the Dogo Onsen town (Dogo Yunomachi, Matsuyama City).

About Tobe ware

Tobe ware (Tobeyaki) is ceramics made mainly around Tobe Town, Iyo District, Ehime Prefecture, and is an Ehime Prefecture-designated intangible cultural property. It was designated as a national traditional craft in 1976. During the Edo period, it developed under the patronage of the Ozu Domain due to high-quality pottery stone being mined.

Its characteristics include applying hand-painted blue patterns using Gosu on relatively thick milky-white porcelain. Because it is thick and hard to break, and easy to hold even when hot things are inside, many daily necessities, centering on tableware, are made. Patterns such as Karakusamon, Taiyomon, and Tokusamon are known.

Location

It is located in the Dogo Onsen town close to the Dogo Onsen Main Building. Since business hours and product availability vary, please check before visiting the store.
